The Taliswood Barn Owl Nest Box Project

At the beginning of 2023, we decided we wanted to help the conservation of Barn Owls and do some work towards increasing the numbers in Norfolk.

The prime aim of our project is to help increase Barn Owl numbers by identifying suitable sites (internal/external) where Barn Owls have been seen and put up nest boxes to provide safe and secure places for them to roost and hopefully breed in future years. We hope this help will contribute to an improvement in the numbers recorded around North Norfolk and the surrounding areas.

John identifies the sites, liaises with land owners and organises everything. The boxes are then made and John goes with a schedule 1 licence holder to put them up, periodically monitor the boxes each year and ring any owlets all at no charge to our project. The schedule 1 licence allows him to do this.  Click on the underlined sentence to find out how Owls are protected in the wild.

We’ve donated a total of £1,000 to our fund so far, enough to buy 16 Barn Owl nest boxes. Since starting earlier this year we have put up 9 nest boxes in North Norfolk, 3 of these were donated to us under the Hawk & Owl Trusts Adopt-a-Box scheme, 3 more sites are lined up and ready to go plus 8 sites have been identified awaiting survey. That’s 17 boxes this year!

Having achieved our goal of 16 boxes, our pot of money has run out so quickly. Neither of us want to call the end.

So the idea of a Barn Owl calendar came about and starts the next stage of our project. It is for sale in our SHOP.

We have decided to donate ALL THE PROFITS from the calendar to our Taliswood Barn Owl Nest Box Project.

If we sell all the calendars from the first print run we could buy and put up around 20 more nest boxes, wouldn’t this be just amazing!!
